Deposit Issues and Complaints (134 reviews)
Deposits for electricity in New Jersey can be a hassle and usually range from $100 to $500. Some companies handle them well with lower deposit amounts or lower credit thresholds while others turn you upside down and shake the lunch money out of your pocket. If deposits are causing you issues, you can read deposit related reviews from other customers before you sign up for an energy company.
Poor customer service
“
Called FOUR times to add a new service to my existing account.
1. Was informed that I need to be transferred to a different team so was put on hold. Was on hold for about 30 minutes EACH time and got a message that "We are unable to take this call, please call back". Did for 4 times and each time I was assured by the first agent that they will make sure I am not disconnected.
2. Had to pay the $250 deposit and provide ID even though I have an existing account and am a customer for over 4 years.
3. Starting a new service with XOOM is very frustrating and tedious. ”

Avoid at all costs!!!
“ Upon move in to my apartment in Sept 2022, the Apartment Rep stated I would be getting a call from their "preferred" electric company to set up my account. And it's all downhill from there. I was charged a deposit fee, then it was refunded, AFTER, I unfroze my credit. But they had to set up a new account to credit me for the unnecessary charge. I did get a credit to my 1st and second bill. Then, from November till July, the bills were what felt was high for a studio apartment, But I continued to pay it in full and on time, however, that changed with the July bill, it was $50 higher, What!!?? I called and asked WTF?? The rep, (who did not speak the best english) told me to contact Oncor, the energy provider and to ask why the bill was so exorbitant. I then ask if I decide to cancel the bill would I be charged an early termination fee, I was told no, on 3 occasions in the same recorded phone call. That call was July 12, 2023. On July 14, 2023, I received a bill with a $218 early termination fee. I called Ambit on the same day and spoke to a Rep named "Janelle" who said "if it's on the invoice, then that is what is owed." The final invoice included the July 2023 amount that I had paid in full earlier that day. The rep stated they could not reprint a revised bill and would not address the conversation from the 12th of July, where I was told there would NOT be a termination fee. I asked for a Supervisor, was transferred to Deidra, and I asked her to pull the recorded call from July 12th, and honor the rep's statement about the no cancelation fee. I told her I was willing to pay for the last 7 days of service I DID use with the company, but not the additional fee i was told would not be charged. She stated she would request the recorded call and determine a possible waiver of the termination fee and call me back by Noon July 15th, 2023. It's now 1:50pm. JULY 15, 2023 . . . No call. So, I called and was told Diedra was not available today and a supervisor that is on hand at that time, named Angela would handle the request. Angela states she will listen to the call and call me back today by 4:30pm. We shall see. Do not do business with this company. Rates are unreal, customer service is atrocious. The apt management here has since changed, so the apartment rep that was getting a kickback from the Ambit Rep is gone. But Knightvest management beware, she may be at one of your other properties here in Ft Worth, hustling the same racket. ”

Buyer Beware of Direct Energy Deals at Sam's Club
“ In 2020, Direct Energy refunded my deposit because I canceled my service agreement with them in good faith. I acquired the agreement while shopping at Sam's Club in the Houston, TX area. The rates in the agreement were 20-40% higher than they showed me at the Sam's Club. It is my understanding that such pricing practices are known as bait and switch.Direct Energy decided that they wanted the deposit refund back. When I refused to repay the refundable deposit, Direct Energy reported their error to the 3 credit bureaus, negatively impacting my credit during the pandemic and continues to do so today. In my opinion, Direct Energy did not deal with me honestly. I thought they were trustworthy because they were selling their product in Sam's Club, of which I am a long-time loyal member. I made Sam's Club aware of the misleading practices of Direct Energy to no avail, as Direct Energy continues to sell energy deals in 2023 in the Sam's Club in Friendswood, TX. ”

Must be run by Trump Family Corp.
“ They lie, they cheat, they steal. They need to be all locked up. Everyone at our campground pay at a different then the other. How can that be. When you go to turn your service on, you think you getting deposit back. Everybody pays a different deposited. You won't. Unless scream and shout for it back! I can go on and on, but I'm at work paying their bill off. ”

Fraud--Plain and simple
“ I signed up via comparepower.com for a rate of 10.9 per kwh on 1000. Ad states as all of their add do "No hidden fees. The rates shown below already include all fees, discounts, and Oncor delivery charges." I was charged for delivery. When I contacted the company, they simply sent my contract back. When I reached them via phone, they refused to credit the overcharges.I complained to BBB at which point I was contacted by their rep. who first said comparepower was a third party and they were not responsible for the content, then said that I misunderstood the ad. Again, he refused to credit the overcharges. He said they would be waiving the 175 cancellation fee. When I asked about my deposit, he said they keep it a year!! What type of company does this? ”

Billing
“ This company is ridiculous I called and payed over the phone. I was not informed of a 60 deposit that needed to be paid. It was also not displayed on my billing to pay online. They shut off our power even with the monthly bill paid. They also said it'll take 24 hours to turn on. We payed the past due and will go without power for 24 hrs?! This is a shit company ”

The most disorganized gas company Ive ever dealt with
“ My attempt at their service begin December 2021. They made me deposit 150 dollars to signup. They couldnt switch my line first month. Asked me for another month. Even then, they couldnt switch for no reason that they could tell me. The supervisor told me theyll give statement credit for that month with my current provider since Id be paying 3x the price as Im no longer under their contract. I send them email with my bill. For 8 months I dont hear from them. They dont even send a single bill. On August or September, they send me all 8 months bills. They never gave me any statement credit. I talked with another supervisor for about 2 hours. She assured theyll fix everything and until then my account will be frozen so that I wont be paying anything until the issues are fixed. One month later another bill comes. No statement credit is given, but there is a late fee attached to it as well. They are either not doing what theyre saying theyre doing or dont have any sort of communication going on to fix my issues. ”
