Deposit Issues and Complaints (134 reviews)
Deposits for electricity in New Jersey can be a hassle and usually range from $100 to $500. Some companies handle them well with lower deposit amounts or lower credit thresholds while others turn you upside down and shake the lunch money out of your pocket. If deposits are causing you issues, you can read deposit related reviews from other customers before you sign up for an energy company.
STAY AS FAR AWAY from this company as you can....they are absolutely the worst, most unethical utility provider in Texas!
“ I was repeatedly overcharged by 5-10% each month and have spent at least 3-4 hours on the phone arguing with their Customer Service department over the last several months trying to get the monthly invoices resolved to no avail. When i finally cancelled the Auto-Pay, my power was disconnected at 3pm on the day prior to the date listed on their "Pending Termination Notice".....and even though I paid their bill within an hour (at 4pm) and called/emailed every contact i could find on their website, they did not get my Power turned back on until the following morning (and refused to cover the cost of my hotel room), which was total BS!!I moved out of the Apartment last Sunday (2/2/20) and have been calling/emailing to try and cancel their service (unsuccessfully) since Friday (1/31/20)......when i finally got a call back from AMBIT this morning, they told me that it will take 2-3 business days to process my cancellation and that any & all energy usage between now & then would be deducted from my $125 deposit....which leaves me with only one viable response for the Leadership Team at AMBIT Energy....I haven't been able to subtantiate yet, but it wouldn't suprise me if either Bernie Madoff or Allen Stanford were one of the ket investment stakeholders in this company early on ”

Same Problems Across the Board - Billing, Customer Service, Errors and at YOUR EXPENSE!
“ I have been an Ambit customer since 2009. They disconnected my service without notification once when I went to pay online and the transaction did not go through for some reason. I was never notified that there was a problem. When I called them back and tried to explain, they said they are able to see when someone was on their website and they had no record that I was on it the day I told them. I knew the day because I made a note in my checkbook. I told them I definitely was on the website and I would look up my computer history to show them when my electricity came back on. They charged me disconnect fees along with others and required a deposit to turn my electricity back on. After my electricity came back on, my computer history in fact did show that I was on the ambit bill pay site that day. They didn't care. Now, they have screwed up my billing for the past several months. I get one bill that says I owe one amount, or have a credit, and then get a disconnect notice the day after my bill is due, all because of their shoddy billing. It is an absolute joke. I haven't received a correct bill in months. I go to the online area to verify it and it is the same as my incorrect bill. Today, the lady told me to ignore the amount due and just pay the current charges amount from the usage. I told her I expected their math to be right and be able to tell me how much was due on my bill. These people are a special kind of STUPID! I am gone! ”

just get another option
“ I sign my 1st contract with them because they where one of the few options available for me at the time, sign up for a rate but since had no credit score they change it to a higher price, plus a deposit.1st I save a lot on energy usually bellow 500kw/h per month they decide to change my meter 2 times charging me for this service this because according to the company I mess with it, but I live on an apartment.2nd. After my 1st year finished, decide to change plan and found a nice plan for on their site. They didn't respect that either and assigned me the worst month to month.3rd Asked for the return on my deposit and they don't want to return it until my contract ends but that contact finished 2 months ago. ”

Definitely not recommended
“ Totally not worth going with this provider,.. After the initial contract you will see the real colors and also once you miss the payment by one day they charge $120 deposit which you will never get back.. Very bad customer service. ”

Worst experience ever.....Never again will I use them.
“ This has been the worst experience ever with the electric company and I had to file a complaint with the Public Utility Commission of Texas to even get an answer. Been living here for 2 months with electricity and even got a bill for a $150 deposit. But all the sudden we got shut off May 1st after we payed $300.00 March 6th then $150 April 17th. They said as of March 8th this meter was on a switch hold so we had to fax them proof we just moved in here on March 16th. At this time we was told it will take 24-48 hrs once fax was received. We waited and STILL at this very moment (5 days have pasted) we have no electricity but on May 1st at around 7:00 pm they confirmed they got the fax... Every time I called all they could say "we emailed our back office and are waiting for them to send back a response". Then when I would check up on it after a few hours they would repeat the same stuff. They say they have no other means of communication to this "back office" other than an email. For 5 days of begging, crying, and pleading with them still nothing. And when I ask them how have we had electricity for 2 months they cant tell me how cuz they don't know, but yet my meter is on a lock down due tempering as of March 8th.Today I finally got someone from there to call me back after I filed a complaint on them today just to tell me the paperwork I sent wasn't matching the county records? Well no shit we go through a "RENTAL" agency. They can't seem to understand that this is our "LANDLORDS" the people we pay rent to.... I would love to just switch company's but I need a deposit to get set up with someone else.... Direct Energy has my $450.00 ... In order to get that money back I would have to wait 4-6 weeks? I finally got them to call my Realtor so they can explain. ... I mean hell I have only told them 20 times to call the phone number on the cover sheet from the fax where it says "If there are and problems please call this number (***)***-****". I will be switching if I do ever get my electricity turned back on......... its 4:21 pm May 6th still am waiting.....ugh... ”
