Deposit Issues and Complaints (134 reviews)
Deposits for electricity in New Jersey can be a hassle and usually range from $100 to $500. Some companies handle them well with lower deposit amounts or lower credit thresholds while others turn you upside down and shake the lunch money out of your pocket. If deposits are causing you issues, you can read deposit related reviews from other customers before you sign up for an energy company.
Shady Practices
“ I was a customer for 5 minutes. No mention of a $250 deposit was made until after I enrolled in one of their plans. They refused to waive the deposit, despite my 750+ credit score with a $70k/yr income. This was for a $48/month electric plan for a small single-person 1,300 sq. home with no mortgage. Absolutely ridiculous. Their customer service reps had no desire to work with me at all, having a "take it or leave it" attitude when I called to either waive the deposit or pay the plan in advance. Thankfully, there is competition out there for utility service, and I did "leave it." ”

What they do is legal...but it is deceptive...
“ Ambit requires 1 year contracts, at least they did for residents of my community. I pay my bills online, but Ambit's website is down regularly after 10pm or so....maybe earlier, but that is when I finish my day and sit down and work on bills and stuff. This led to late payments, waiting for the next time the site was up. So I set up auto pay, but then my bill goes up. And then a payment fails, but I am not notified until my service is cut. Sometimes I work from home, so this is not acceptable. I am planning to move, but now that they have required a deposit, and for me to re-start a 1 year contact because of the shut off, I will lose the deposit when I move. All of this is legal. You can get bills and notices mailed, but they won't get to you in time, so paying online is still better. But keep an eye on the rate and rate changes and don't set up autopay. Better yet...don't waste your time and money on this outfit. Look at their reviews. They are profitable because of with held deposits, fees, and energy rates that change or are to their best interest, not yours. ”

Deposit Refund
“ After 1 month from final meter read, I had not received my deposit refund. I called, and was informed that is because I had not requested the deposit to be refunded. After my request, the refunded deposit was received 2 months after the final meter reading date. Unacceptable. ”

This people are form of jokers- Poor Billing everymonth
“ I still haven't fully review my bill. I keep having issues with them each time they have the balance forward. If they make changes to the account, they always still bring the deducted amount forward to the new bill. It is either their customer service unit and their billing department does not communicate with each other. I have a deposit of $250. After i cancel credit due back to me was $201 now it shows $112. I will wait and let them send my final check. But my experience with them on bills has been one call over another every month. Their billing department needs thorough review. ”
