Beautiful, and an irreplaceable part of a New Jersey Christmas. But lighting up all those bulbs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/wonk\/wp\/2017\/11\/24\/what-your-christmas-lights-will-do-to-your-electricity-bill\/?utm_term=.c2a5bc09d8b7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uses up a lot of electricity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially for an entire month. So how much will you spend on lighting this Christmas, and can you do anything to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.njenergyratings.com\/resources\/high-new-jersey-electricity-bill-heres-what-you-can-do\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">save money on electricity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Much Electricity Do Christmas Lights Use?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nationally, Americans consume about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2015-12-christmas-energy-entire-countries.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6.63 billion kilowatt hours of electricity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in order to light up their Christmas decorations. That\u2019s a hard number to picture, so to put it in perspective, some countries &#8211; Ethiopia, El Salvador, and Tanzania, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightbulbs.com\/blog\/led-vs-incandescent-christmas-lights\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use less electricity than that in an entire year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The amount of electricity that your home\u2019s display consumes is mostly dependent on the type of bulbs you use. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Old-fashioned incandescent bulbs eat up a lot more electricity, about 10 times as much, leading to a much higher electricity bill. If you\u2019re looking to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.njenergyratings.com\/resources\/10-quick-energy-savings-tips\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cut down on electricity usage this Christmas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, LED lights are a much better bet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Much Will I Spend On Christmas Lighting?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Firstly, let\u2019s talk about the different bulb types you\u2019ll probably be using. Here are the most common<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christmaslightsetc.com\/pages\/how-many-watts-amps-do-christmas-lights-use.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> incandescent and LED size christmas light bulbs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Incandescent:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Mini Bulbs:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 0.41 watts per bulb<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Two-Inch C7 Bulb: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 watts per bulb<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Three-Inch C9 Bulb: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7 watts per bulb<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>LED:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>LED Mini:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 0.07 watts per bulb<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>LED C9: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">0.09 watts per bulb<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To work out how much you\u2019re paying in electricity, there\u2019s a simple estimation you can perform. Multiply the number of bulbs you have by the number of watts each bulb uses. So, if you have 5 100-bulb strings of incandescent C7 bulbs, you\u2019ll need to do 5 x 100 x 5 = 2,500.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now times that by the number of pennies you pay per kWh. A typical rate might be about 12 cents per kWh, though <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.njenergyratings.com\/electricity-rates\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electricity rates in New Jersey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will vary, so 12 x 2,500 = 30,000. To convert our watts into kWh, we need to divide by 1,000. That gives us a total of 30,000 \/ 1,000 = $30.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s an example:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>10 x 100-bulb strings of incandescent C7 bulbs on the eaves:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 1,000 x 5 x 12 cents per kWh = 60,000 cents. Divided by 1,000, this makes $60<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>5 x 100-bulb strings of LED C9 bulbs around front porch: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">500 x 0.09 x 12 cents per kWh = 5,400 cents, divided by 1,000 makes $5.40.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply add together all your different lighting strings and you\u2019ll have a good idea of what you\u2019re spending. A low-usage home might only spend around $10 in total, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christmaslightsetc.com\/pages\/how-much-power.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">talk-of-the-neighborhood extravaganzas can cost several hundred dollars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So How Can I Save Money On Electricity This Christmas?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, there\u2019s one immediate way to cut down on electricity costs. Switching from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/clark.com\/homes-real-estate\/will-led-christmas-lights-save-you-money\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">incandescent to LED bulbs saves a huge amount of electricity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as you can see from the calculations above. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even the largest LED bulb uses less than a quarter of the power of the smallest incandescent bulb. You can even use our rough usage costs to work out whether switching to LED lights will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.njenergyratings.com\/blog\/2018\/11\/07\/hot-tips-saving-winter-electric-bills-jersey\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">save you electricity this Christmas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>10 x 100-bulb strings of C7 Incandescents: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1,000 x 5 x 12 = 60,000 cents \/ $60<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>10 x 100-bulb strings of C9 LEDs: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1,000 x 0.09 x 12 = 1,080 \/ $1.08<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So by upgrading to LED lights you\u2019ll save $60 per year.
